Everything about Isidore Of Charax totally explained
Isidore of Charax was a 1st century geographer from the city of
Charax (
Abadan in today's
Iran). He is mentionned by
Pliny the Elder (23-79) as one of his sources. He wrote several books of which a few fragments are known:
- "Parthian Stations"
- "Journey Around Parthia"
- "Description of the World"
"Parthians stations" in particular describes the overland trade route between the
Near East and
India during the 1st century BCE.
Isidore of Charax is often quoted for a description of
Arachosia in the 1st century BCE, in which he mentions Greek populations and cities, one of them called Demetrias, under Parthian rule:
» "Beyond is Arachosia. And the Parthians call this White India; there are the city of Biyt and the city of Pharsana and the city of Chorochoad and the city of Demetrias; then Alexandropolis, the metropolis of Arachosia; it's Greek, and by it flows the river Arachotus. As far as this place the land is under the rule of the Parthians." "Parthians stations", 1st century BCE.
